Kathryn Madill

Kathryn Madill, based in Dunedin, is one of New Zealand's leading painters and printmakers, known particularly for her fine prints and paintings drawn from fragments of literature, mythology, and fairytale.

In the age-old tradition of the printmaker, her work sometimes taps into the dark side of the subconscious, but there is also an uplifting quality of belief underpinning much of her work.

She draws the viewer into her imaginative, sometimes haunting storytelling through its intimacy and fine detail, and her sublime sensitivity to mood.

Born in Ruatahuna in 1951, Kathryn Madill also grew up in Taupo and Dunedin. She majored in printmaking for her Fine Arts degree from the University of Canterbury, graduating in 1971, and now lives and works in Dunedin in the south of New Zealand.

Recent Work  back to top

The works featured include mezzotints from the 1990s which are the last available of each edition, being released from the artist’s collection. They thus include some rare artist’s proofs and first-in-edition. Some are based on Shakespeare, some on Victorian literature in which she has a special interest, others on mythological reference or life experience, often with a contemporary edge.

Another five works by this artist are available to view on request, please contact us

Her more recent printmaking includes lithographs which read somewhat like Medieval tapestries, with mythological and classical religious references in animals and objects with powerful connotations. Yet modern-day elements find their way in as if time has been compressed, bringing a sense of age-old stories emerging in present context, or the reverse.

More About the Artist  back to top

Born in Ruatahuna in the Bay of Plenty in 1951, Kathryn Madill also grew up in Taupo and Dunedin, and has lived in the Nelson region for a time. She majored in printmaking for her Fine Arts degree from the University of Canterbury, graduating in 1971. Her prints are mainly in drypoint, lithography, woodcut and in mezzotint – a process which allows very intense inking and depth in the work.

In recent years she has also established a strong following for her paintings, which like her prints have an otherworldly, haunting or lyrical feel, accentuated by her fine use of oil or gesso. She has also done a number of collaborative projects with authors. She exhibits widely throughout New Zealand and has works in private and public collections here and in Australia.

We will have a solo exhibition of her works, paintings and prints, early in 2011.

Kathryn Madill lives and works in Dunedin, in the south of New Zealand.
